š Weekly Links Vacation Edition Volume I
Light dose of links and videos to enrich your summer vacations
It might not feel like it due to the COVID-induced time distortions, but itās already August! This, in Spain, means heat, beach, and many businesses and services being shut for a whole month.
My colleague Mario and I are honoring this ancestral summer vacation tradition and we are enjoying some deserved āremote working vacationsā, so we will keep it light for the next couple weeks.
It will be a great chance for us to take a rest and work on more long-form articles that we think you will really enjoy, including an article explaining why using Roam Research will upgrade basically every aspect of your knowledge management (and the easiest way to get started); Mac productivity, and more.
For now, we hope you find this weekās videos and links interesting. Enjoy your vacation if you have them!

Inside Carlos Ghosnās Unbelievable, Daring Escape: Carlos Ghosn escaped Japan in December last year in an adventure that well deserves a movie. If you prefer text, Bloomberg also wrote this more detailed piece: The Tokyo Job: Inside Carlos Ghosnās Escape to Beirut
Joe Rogan with John Carmack (the creator of Doom and Quake). It has more than one year but it is one of the best Joe Rogan shows ever. Totally worth seeing and hearing Carmack sharing his vast knowledge on software, games and rockets. The interview combined with the book Masters of Doom is a total must for nerds born in the 80s (like 90% of Gray Matters readers)
I made a robot to cut my hair with scissors: Hairdressing will be disrupted shortly and we will miss the times where we needed a human to put some sharp scissors near our skulls. Until them, it is funny to see the current prototypes like this one. Very scary.
He is shooting a 30 year timelapse of New York: The man who is making a 30-year time-lapse of New York gives a detailed explanation of the hardware and setup used for this life project.
The History of the World: Every Year: The history of the world detailed per year. I needed to pause this video like 80 times to appreciate all the amazing information included.

Letās start with an optimist piece of news regarding COVID-19. It turns out that wearing masks, despite not protecting completely, probably reduces viral load a great deal, which leads to very mild or even asymptomatic infections.
Continuing with this extra nerdy and amazing walkthrough of the avionics guts and systems of a Boeing 747-400 from a hackerās perspective
Lastly, I recommend this excellent video about why the International Date Line is so weird by Johnny Harris
